Dealing with Whiplash

  • A rear-impact collision where the impact car is moving as slow as 5 m.p.h. can cause whiplash.

  • The following factors are indicators for more severe injury: female, having a smaller neck diameter, not being aware of the collision, not having your foot on the brake, looking to the side, immediately feeling neck pain.

  • It is very common - and there is a very sound physiological explanation for it - that your injuries in an rear-end collision may not become apparent until 24 to 48 hours after the accident. The opposing insurance companies and lawyers will tell you that means your injuries are minor - or have nothing to do with the accident.

  • But current studies demonstrate clearly how injuries can and do happen in low-speed rear end collisions. Unfortunately, most medically trained physicians will tell you that these types of injuries are "all in your head" - that you are "imagining" your pain.

  • Dr. Harrington is very-well trained in the care of whiplash injuries. If you have been injured in an accident, you have the right to be made well.

A typical low-speed, rear-end collision: The yellow car is stopped at a stop light - the red car strikes the yellow car. Even when the red car is moving as slow as 5 m.p.h., the occupants of the yellow car can be injured.

Proper head restraint position: The top of the head restraint should be at the upper half of your head.

Improper head restraint position: This head restraint is too low. In a rear-end collision, the restraint will act as a fulcrum, the neck will contact the restraint, and the head will flop over the back of the restraint - causing numerous injuries.

Low-speed, rear-end collisions can cause brain injury.

Regardless of head restraint position - a person can be injured in a rear-end collision. This picture shows how the shoulder restraint holds the upper body and torso in position, while the head and neck continue moving forward. This causes the brain and skull to be severely tractioned upward, stretching the brain stem.
